On August 1, Crimson Laurel Gallery opens an exhibition of ceramic heads by sculptor Tom Bartel.  According to Tom " The figure has been a potent symbol and charged subject since antiquity, and continues to be an appropriate vehicle to ask some of life’s most challenging questions."  Tom uses  the human condition as a point of departure where themes related to gender, rites of passage, fertility and mortality are constant “threads” within his  creative practice.  Tom sees our skin as having the same story-telling potential as the ceramic surfaces he develops. "Throughout our life our appearance slowly and inevitably changes; in the process our skin records this story."

The lecture by internationally recognized sculptor Peter Callas on July 7 was well attended.  Those who attended the lecture gained some insight into the life of a ceramic sculptor.  Peter discussed his influences and successes, and also the allure of ceramic sculpture and firing with wood that serves as a constant challenge.  Afterward, Peter returned to the gallery and discussed the Serendipity exhibition artists and pieces with many of our guests.  We enjoyed hosting Peter and his wife Chrissi and David and I are happy to have made two great new friends.  Our good friend Andrew Glasgow, retired executive director of  the American Craft Council introduced Peter and we thank Andrew...

Serendipity: An international Exhibition of Wood Fired Ceramics curated by Eric Knoche including the "Functional Element" opened on July 1 and the exhibition is a fantastic collection of work from around the world.  The fourteen sculptors featured Serendipity are among the best in the world and the eight functional artists are also unsurpassed.  To celebrate this very special exhibition we have asked internationally recognized ceramic sculptor Peter Callas to speak at the Historic Mitchell County Courthosue in downtown Bakersville, NC at 5pm on July 7.  Mr. Callas will speak about his forty year career as a ceramic sculptor, his twenty-three year collaboration with Peter...
