Artist Statement
Matt makes functional pots with historical references, including storage jars, pitchers, teapots, tableware, and large garden planters. As a native of the region, Matt has long been drawn to the old alkaline-glazed wares made in the Carolina's during the 19th and 20th Centuries and many of his pots are inspired by these traditional pieces in their shapes and simple decorative treatments. However, Matt also references the pots of other cultures, including Chinese vases with delicate hand-painted decorations.
