"Remember when the concept of finding a toy in the bottom of a Cracker Jack box or stickers in the box of breakfast cereal was a really big deal when you were a kid? If you don't - I bet you did not grow up in the 50's and 60's like I did. I can also remember when my mom used to get a large drinking glass or some other kind of useful kitchen object as a freebie in large boxes of laundry soap! The reason I bring this up is because I often feel my work represented in this show at Crimson Laurel Gallery would be the kind of pots I would like to discover mixed in with laundry crystals or Cheerios or Cracker Jacks. Even though I am using a firing process that is thousands of years old and originated in the orient, I still maintain of my pots represented in this show speak volumes about my American heritage, and as importantly, my personality. They feel very contemporary and belong in a 21st century home. I've been incorporating two-dimensional decal images with my ceramics for more the forty years. I know the primary reason I employ the transferred surface imagery is because before i was a ceramist, I was a printmaker and utilized silk-screening early on as a printmaker. One of my Pop Art idols was Andy Warhol and even though Andy is no longer with us, his artworks of Marilyn Monroe and Chairman Mao and other bonafide movie stars and heads of states, still buoy my spirits and inspire me."
