Artist Statement

I work within a functional format and am informed by the rich history of ceramics. At its best, my work reflects upon these extensive traditions and adds a new and interesting layer. I strive for my forms to transcend their utilitarian boundaries and to function equally as sculptural elements. I am interested in composition, surface, and craftsmanship as well as utility, and for the combination of these elements to create a dialogue between maker, user, and object.

Process and problem solving remain primary in my exploration. Each pot I make informs the next. Change is not forced, but evolves slowly and steadily through investigation and discovery. The new and exciting information gained from each kiln load influences subtle changes in the next group of wares. The evolution that takes place applies to every aspect of the process including function and intent.

I navigate through the experience as an inquisitive problem solver but am fueled by my creative spirit. The pursuit of beauty through this process offers me inspired freedom and has proven to be a consistent source of challenges, revelations, and amazement. Each experience with clay and fire reveals both mystery and familiarity. Mirroring my desire to better understand my niche in this world, this process offers endless opportunities that must be filtered through singularly and with careful attention in order to achieve a more resolved cumulative knowledge.
