One of the most interesting parts of our jobs at the gallery consists of getting to visit the studios of the artists we represent.
One of the most interesting parts of our jobs at the gallery consists of getting to visit the studios of the artists we represent.

On Saturday we had the pleasure of being the guests at Jeannine Marchand's studio.
The first thing we noticed was that Jeannine's studio perched on a hill has an amazing view of the woods and mountains close to the Penland School of Crafts in NC. The second thing was the wonderful amount of work she had both in process as well as on display.

Jeannine told us how the concept for her cloth-like work started in 2012 by accident; when she was stretching a slab of clay onto a table a section ripped off and flew across the room and when it landed it created a folded shape similar to a piece of drapery. This became a starting point for years of focus and refinement of her pure white, silky smooth, undulating, wall sculptures that dominate her studio space. The way these pieces create depth and cast shadows from being side lit make them even more breathtaking and impressive. One can vary the appearance simply by altering the direction of the lighting.

Other tangents of this work can be seen in her simplified closed forms, her thrown vases and hand built projections. All have a similar pristine quality about them. And all are equally refined and sculptural - be it singularly or in groupings.

Friends of the Crimson Laurel Gallery,

In our last update, we only gave you a few details about Andy Palmer, our new gallery director. He arrived in Bakersville a couple of weeks ago and is putting the finishing touches on the gallery for Thursday’s annual Spring opening. When we hired Andy, we got a nice surprise and a little more than we bargained for. More about that later.

I had the pleasure of meeting with Nicole Aquillano inside her studio in Boston, MA. We all admire her pieces at Crimson Laurel Gallery on a daily basis and it was such a privilege to chat with her in person & be walked through her process.
