Friends of the Crimson Laurel Gallery,

In our last update, we only gave you a few details about Andy Palmer, our new gallery director. He arrived in Bakersville a couple of weeks ago and is putting the finishing touches on the gallery for Thursday’s annual Spring opening. When we hired Andy, we got a nice surprise and a little more than we bargained for. More about that later.

Andy comes to us most recently from Lisle, New York and has spent most of his life in the Upstate. Andy says he likes the feel of Bakersville. “I grew up in a small town. We even had a hitching post for the horses at school.”

Andy received his BS in Art at James Madison University in Virginia. He spent time teaching art at junior and senior high schools before getting his Master’s in Education at SUNY Cortland. Not long afterwards he became the program supervisor for the ceramics department at Cornell University.

With the great recession came some budget cuts. (Isn’t it always in the arts?) So Andy decided to open his own ceramics studio, building his own soda kiln, teaching classes and participating in travelling workshops. Andy considers himself multi-capable. “I’ve been commissioned to do works in stained glass, woodworking, painting and other media. I guess I have a hard time sticking to one thing. So much craft, so little time.”

But even with all the background and experience Andy brings to Crimson Laurel Gallery, there’s even more good news. Andy’s new bride, Silvia Ferrari-Palmer, joins us, too. Married only last October, (they’re still making eyes at each other), Silvia has a background that will complement Andy’s management of the gallery.

Silvia is from Milan, Italy with an accent that radiates with Old World sophisticated charm. Also the artist, she has a degree in graphic design with experience in magazine layout and advertising design. Like Andy she doesn’t sit still for long, selling equine paintings online and even has experience in horse riding instruction. She’s already taken over our in-house digital web master duties.

When away from ceramics, Andy likes to spend his time keeping his hands busy making furniture, dabbling in glass, metalsmithing and carpentry. As a pretty active rock climber he won’t have to travel far from Bakersville to enjoy the sport. He’s looking forward to visits from his three daughters, aged 14 to 21. At home, Silvia is the chef of the new family, with a love of good cheese and pesto and an appreciation for foods natural and organic.

Crimson Laurel gallery opens Thursday, May 1st. We hope you’ll make it by the place this year. We offer ceramics, jewelry, furniture and fine art from some of the finest artists around the world. The folks that run the place are pretty nice, too. Drop in and give them a warm North Carolina welcome.
